CAT TALK

What is my cat saying?

Meow

A command of some sort---for attention or for you to do something for him.  Like “feed me!” if said near the food bowl or “open the door to let me into the bedroom” if said near the door.

MEEOOW

An extended meow that drops lower at the end. It is an insistent meow meaning you haven’t given him what he wants. It can get even louder and without the inflection at the end which means even stronger insistence for you to pay attention and fulfill his demands!

MYUP

This meow is said quickly in one note and said sharply. If you jar your cat while sleeping he’ll usually respond with this –as if to say,” So, you disturbed me-what’s up?”  It shows indignation like, ‘How dare you.”  It may also be used after going to the litter box and running out of the room as if to say, “Good riddance.”

MERRROW

Said low and drawn out. When crouched down and butt swishing, it says, “Watch out, I’m going to pounce”- or-“Get out of my way!”

 RRRYOWWEOWWRRYOWWW

This caterwauling sound is made by a tomcat seeding his mate and/or declaring his territory. You usually hear it outside your bedroom window at two am.
